PROJECT PROFILES

Savannah River National Laboratory

Summary:

Quality Lakes Inc. (QLI) was contacted by the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) to conduct bathymetric lake mapping of two lakes in Aiken, SC. The lakes of interest were part of a modeling study being conducted with regard to flows and volumes within a particular drainage. SRNL also wanted the data collected for use in their modeling efforts.

Both lakes were mapped in 2008, Flat Rock Pond (46 acres) and Bridge Creek Pond (32 acres). Contour, 3D maps, ArcView shape files, auto CAD files, UTM and depth files were provided to the client.

Hampton Lake, Bluffton, SC (www.hamptonlake.com)

Summary:

Hampton Lake was the first freshwater lake-front community developed in the SC Lowcountry. Initiated in 2006 by Reed Development Inc. of Bluffton, this 955 acre project, complete with a 165 acre 'golf course under water' was underway when Quality Lakes Inc. (QLI) was hired in 2007. This is a multifaceted project that includes a host of responsibilities that are ongoing today.

QLI President Wade Bales was brought in to set up the community's club operations. This included oversight of specialized companies that provide high-end member services in the areas of fitness, food and beverage, security, landscaping, lake management, fishery management, wildlife management, and all the many service providers necessary to keep the community facilities running in top shape. In addition to the lake, a 345 acre nature preserve or greenway(s) is a vital part of the community. QLI was retained due to extensive administrative experience acquired by Mr. Bales in previous professional roles, and due to 15+ years experience in natural resource management, particularly fishery management.

While QLI's primary responsibility is to maintain the lake's aethetics, fishery, and wildlife habitat, the complexity of this project requires routine monitoring of many factors not readily noticed by visitors and residents alike. This includes erosion control, most of which was remedied by a joint project between QLI and Palmetto Coastal Landscaping Inc., where sod was place on most of the lake shoreline. In addition, overseeding of critical wetland banks was conducted. Due to the vast wetlands present, all of which remain connected to maintain natural flow regimes seasonally, many in-fall and out-fall structures are serviced on a regular basis. Aquatic weed control is conducted weekly and vital littoral shelves built into the lake's design are also maintained. Water quality is monitored annually and the lake is fertilized to maximize fish growth.

The beauty and functionality of the lake is a vital part of this award-winning, successful private community. QLI is proud to be a part of Reed Development's success.

Brays Island Club, Sheldon, SC (www.braysisland.org)

Summary:

Fishery Management: Quality Lakes Inc. (QLI) began working with Brays Island late in 2007 on their pond management program. Their pond program needed a comprehensive approach to improving the catch of resident anglers. Extensive electrofishing has been conducted as well as specific harvest of certain fish species to increase the growth and condition of primarily their largemouth bass fisheries. Since the project was initiated, average relative condition of largemouth bass has increased 10-24%. The quality of anglers' fishing experiences has improved significantly.

Lake Construction: In 2008 Brays Island had the opportunity to construct two new lakes in exchange for sand removal necessary for a local road improvement project. QLI was brought in to design the two lakes for optimum angling opportunities. Using their partnership with The Mapping Network, designs for both lakes were constructed with appropriate morphology including slopes, depths, and important wetland habitats. Contractors were able to utilize these designs for construction activities. One lake has been completed and the second lake is near completion. Fish stocking and wetland plantings were completed as well on the first lake.

Lake Mapping: A lake mapping project was completed in 2009 on House Pond, a 26-acre saltwater impoundment located on Brays Island. The management challenge is getting sufficient water exchange during summer months to provide adequate water quality for popular sportfish such as redfish and flounder. The dike system on this lake had been renovated only a few years prior to this mapping effort. However, the concern was potential sedimentation had negated efforts to provide more fish habitat. QLI mapping proved this to be the case as significant sedimentation had occurred. Mapping also provided vital information necessary for placement of subsurface aeration pumps, which have helped improve summer fishery habitat.
